Baruch-Baruk

To Yisrael In Exile

1 And these are the words of the scroll that Baruch the son of Neriyah the son of Maaseyah the son of Tzidkiyahu the son of Asadiyah the son of Hilkiyahu wrote in Bavel,

2 In the fifth year and in the seventh yom of the chodesh, at the time the Chaldeans took Yahrushalayim and burnt it with fire.

3 And Baruch read the words of this scroll in the hearing of Yechonyahu the son of Yahuyakim melech of Yahudah and in the ears of all the people that came to hear the scroll,

4 And in the hearing of the nobles and of the melech's sons and in the hearing of the zechanim and of all the people, from the lowest to the highest, even of all them that dwelt at Bavel by the River Sud.

5 Whereupon they wept, fasted and made tefillah before YHUH.

6 They made also a collection of money according to every man's power:

7 And they sent it to Yahrushalayim to Eliakim the Kohen HaGadol, the ben of Hilkiyahu ben of Shlomo and to the kohanim and to all the people who were found with him at Yahrushalayim,

8 At the same time when he received the vessels of the bayit of YHUH that were carried out of the temple, to return them into the land of Yahudah, the tenth yom of the chodesh Sivan, namely, silver vessels, which Tzidkiyahu the ben of Husha melech of Yahudah had made,

9 After that Nevuchadnetsar melech of Bavel had carried away Yechonyahu, the princes, the captives, the mighty men and the people of the land, from Yahrushalayim and brought them to Bavel.

10 And they said, Behold, we have sent you money to buy you burnt offerings and sin offerings and incense and prepare the lechem ha’panayim to offer upon the altar of YHUH our Ahlohim;

11 And make tefillah for the chayim of Nevuchadnetsar melech of Bavel and for the chayim of Belshatsar his son, that their yamim may be upon earth as the yamim of the shamayim:

12 And YHUH will give us strength and lighten our eyes and we shall live safely under the shadow of Nevuchadnetsar melech of Bavel and under the shadow of Belshatsar his son and we shall serve them many yamim and find chen in their sight.

13 Make tefillah for us also to YHUH our Ahlohim, for we have sinned against YHUH our Ahlohim; and to this yom the fury of YHUH and His wrath is not turned away from us.

14 And you shall read this scroll, which we have sent to you, to make confession in the bayit of YHUH, upon the moadem and solemn yamim.

15 And you shall say, To YHUH our Ahlohim belongs tzedakah, but to us confusion of faces, as it is come to pass this yom, to them of Yahudah and to the inhabitants of Yahrushalayim,

16 And to our melechim and to our princes and to our kohanim and to our neviim and to our ahvot:

17 For we have sinned before YHUH,

18 And disobeyed Him and have not listened to the voice of YHUH our Ahlohim, to walk in the mitzvoth that He gave us openly:

19 Since the yom that YHUH brought our ahvot out of the land of Mitzrayim, to this present yom, we have been disobedient to YHUH our Ahlohim and we have been negligent by not hearing His voice.

20 So the evils cleaved to us and the curse, which YHUH appointed by Moshe Rabeinu His eved at the time that He brought our ahvot out of the land of Mitzrayim, to give us a land that flows with milk and honey, as it is this yom.

21 Nevertheless we have not listened to the voice of YHUH our Ahlohim, according to all the words of the neviim, whom He sent to us:

22 But every man followed the imagination of his own wicked lev to serve strange ahlohim and to do evil in the sight of YHUH our Ahlohim.

2 Therefore YHUH has made tov on His Word, which He pronounced against us and against our shophtim who judged Yisrael and against our melechim and against our princes and against the men of Yisrael and Yahudah,

2 To bring upon us great plagues, such as never came to pass under the whole shamayim as it did in Yahrushalayim, according to the things that were written in The Torah of Moshe Rabeinu;

3 That a man should eat the flesh of his own ben and the flesh of his own daughter.

4 Moreover He has delivered them to be in subjection to all the malchutim that are round about us, to be as a reproach and desolation among all the people round about, where YHUH has scattered them.

5 So we were cast down and not exalted because we have sinned against YHUH our Ahlohim and have not been obedient to His voice.

6 To YHUH our Ahlohim belongs tzedakah: but to us and to our ahvot open shame, as appears this yom.

7 For all these plagues are come upon us, which YHUH has pronounced against us;

8 Yet have we not made tefillah before YHUH, that we might turn everyone from the imaginations of their wicked levavot.

9 So YHUH watched over us for evil and YHUH has brought it upon us: for YHUH is tzadik in all His works which He has commanded us.

10 Yet we have not listened to His voice, to walk in the mitzvoth of YHUH, that He has set before us.

11 And now, O YHUH Ahlohim of Yisrael, who have brought Your people out of the land of Mitzrayim with a Mighty Hand and High Arm and with signs and with wonders and with great Power and have gotten Yourself a great Name, as appears this yom:

12 O YHUH our Ahlohim, we have sinned, we have done wickedly; we have dealt unrighteously in all Your ordinances.

13 Let Your wrath turn from us: for we are but a few left among the goyim, where You have scattered us.

14 Hear our tefillot, O YHUH and our petitions and deliver us for Your own sake and give us chen in the sight of them who have led us away:

15 That all the earth may know that You are YHUH our Ahlohim because Yisrael and his posterity is called by Your Name.

16 O YHUH, look down from Your Beit HaMikdash and consider us: bow down Your ear, O YHUH, to hear us.

17 Open Your eyes and behold; for the dead who are in the graves, whose beings are taken from their bodies, will give to YHUH neither hallel nor tzedakah:

18 But the being that is greatly vexed, who goes stooping and feeble and the eyes that fail and the hungry being, will give You hallel and tzedakah, O YHUH.

19 Therefore we do not make our humble supplication before You, O YHUH our Ahlohim, for the tzedakah of our ahvot and of our melechim, for they had none.

20 For You have sent out Your wrath and indignation upon us, as You have spoken by Your avadim the neviim, saying,

21 This says YHUH, Bow down your shoulders to serve the melech of Bavel: so shall you remain in the land that I gave to your ahvot.

22 But if you will not hear the voice of YHUH, to serve the melech of Bavel,

23 I will cause to cease out of the cites of Yahudah and from out of Yahrushalayim, the voice of simcha and the voice of gilah, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the kalah: and the whole land shall be desolate of inhabitants.

24 But we would not listen to Your voice, to serve the melech of Bavel: therefore have You made tov the Words that You spoke by Your avadim the neviim, namely, that the bones of our melechim and the bones of our ahvot, should be taken out of their place.

25 And, see, they are cast out to the heat of the yom and to the frost of the lyla and they died in great miseries by famine, by sword and by pestilence.

26 And the Bayit which is called by Your Name have You laid waste, as it is seen this yom, for the wickedness of Beit Yisrael and Beit Yahudah.

27 O YHUH our Ahlohim, You have dealt with us after all Your tov-ness and according to all Your great rachamim,

28 As You spoke by Your eved Moshe Rabeinu in the yom when You commanded him to write The Torah before the children of Yisrael, saying,

29 If you will not hear My voice, surely this very great multitude shall be turned into a small number among the goyim where I will scatter them.

30 For I knew that they would not hear Me because it is a stiffnecked people: but in the land of their captivities they shall remember themselves.

31 And shall know that I AM YHUH their Ahlohim: for I will give them a lev and ears to shema:

32 And they shall hallel Me in the land of their captivity and think upon My Name,

33 And make teshuvah from their stiff neck and from their wicked deeds: for they shall remember the derachot of their ahvot, who sinned before YHUH.

34 And I will bring them again into the land which I promised with an oath to their ahvot, Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov and they shall be masters of it: and I will increase them and they shall not be diminished.

35 And I will make an everlasting brit with them to be their Ahlohim and they shall be My People-Ami: and I will no more drive My people Yisrael out of the land that I have given them.

3 O YHUH Almighty, Ahlohim of Yisrael, the being in anguish, the troubled ruach, cries out to You.

2 Hear, O YHUH and have rachamim; as You are full of rachamim: and have pity upon us because we have sinned before You.

3 For You endure le-olam-va-ed and we perish utterly.

4 O YHUH Almighty, You Ahlohim of Yisrael, hear now the tefillot of the dead Yisraelites, when they were still alive and of their children who have sinned before You, by not hearkening to the voice of You their Ahlohim: for which cause these plagues cleave to us.

5 Remember not the iniquities of our ahvot: but think upon Your Power and Your Name now at this time.

6 For You are YHUH our Ahlohim and we will hallel You, O YHUH.

7 And for this cause You have put Your fear in our levavot, to the intent that we should call upon Your Name and hallel You in our captivity: for we have called to mind all the iniquity of our ahvot, who sinned before You.

8 Behold, we are yet this yom in our captivity, where You have scattered us for a reproach and a curse and to be subject to payments, according to all the iniquities of our ahvot, who departed from YHUH our Ahlohim.

9 Shema Yisrael, the mitzvoth of chayim: give ear to understand chochmah.

10 How did it come to pass in Yisrael, that you are in your enemies' land, that you are grown old in a strange country, that you are defiled with the dead,

11 That you are counted with them that go down into Sheol?

12 You have forsaken the fountain of chochmah.

13 For if you had walked in the Derech of Ahlohim, you should have dwelt in shalom le-olam-va-ed.

14 Learn where is chochmah? Where is strength? Where is binah? So that you may know also where is length of yamim and chayim and where is the ohr of the eyes and shalom?

15 Who has found out her place? Or, who has come into her treasures?

16 Where have the princes of the goyim gone and such as ruled the beasts upon the earth;

17 They that had their pastime with the fowls of the air and they that hoarded up silver and gold, in which men trust and made no end of their getting?

18 For they that worked in silver and were so careful and whose works are unsearchable,

19 They are vanished and gone down to the grave and others are come up in their place.

20 Young men have seen ohr and dwelt upon the earth: but the derech of da’at have they not known,

21 Nor understood the derachot of it, nor laid hold of it: their children were far off from that derech.

22 It has not been heard of in Kanaan, neither has it been seen in Teman.

23 The Agarenes that seek chochmah upon earth, the merchants of Meran and of Teman, the authors of fables and searchers out of binah; none of these have known the Derech of chochmah, or remember her derachot.

24 O Yisrael, how great is the Bayit of Ahlohim. And how large is the place of His possession.

25 It is great, high and unmeasurable and has no end.

26 There were the nephilim, famous from Beresheet, that were of so great stature and so expert in war.

27 YHUH did not choose them, neither gave He the derech of da’at to them:

28 But they were destroyed because they had no chochmah and perished through their own foolishness.

29 Who has gone up into the shamayim and taken her and brought her down from the clouds?

30 Who has gone over the sea and found her and will bring her for pure gold?

31 No man knows her derachot, nor thinks of her derech.

32 But He who knows all things knows her and has found her out with His binah: He that prepared the earth le-olam-va-ed has filled it with four-footed beasts:

33 He that sends forth ohr and it goes, calls it again and it obeys Him with fear.

34 The cochavim shone in their watches and rejoiced: when He called them, they say, Hinayne; and so with cheerfulness they showed ohr to Him who made them.

35 This is our Ahlohim and there shall no other be counted as comparable to Him

36 He has found out all the derech of da’at and has given it to Yaakov His eved and to Yisrael His beloved.

37 Afterward He showed Himself upon earth and conversed with men.

4 This is the scroll of the mitzvoth of Ahlohim and The Torah that endures le-olam-va-ed: all they that keep it shall come to chayim; but such as leave it shall die.

2 Turn, O Yaakov and take hold of it: walk in the presence of the ohr of it, that you may be illuminated.

3 Give not your esteem to another, nor the things that are profitable to you to a strange nation.

4 O Yisrael, happy are we: for things that are pleasing to Ahlohim are made known to us.

5 Be of tov cheer, my people, the remnant of Yisrael.

6 You were sold to the goyim, not for your destruction: but because you moved Ahlohim to wrath you were delivered to the enemies.

7 For you provoked Him that made you by sacrificing to shedim and not to Ahlohim.

8 You have forgotten YHUH Ahlohim, that brought you up; and you have grieved Yahrushalayim, that nursed you.

9 For when she saw the wrath of Ahlohim coming upon you, she said, Listen, O you that dwell around Tzion: Ahlohim has brought upon me great mourning;

10 For I saw the captivity of my sons and daughters, which YHUH brought upon them.

11 With gilah did I nourish them; but sent them away with weeping and mourning.

12 Let no man rejoice over me, a widow and forsaken of many, who because of the sins of my children I am left desolate; because they departed from The Torah of Ahlohim.

13 They knew not His chukim, nor walked in the derachot of His mitzvoth, nor trod in the derachot of talmidut in His tzedakah.

14 Let them that dwell around Tzion come and remember you, the captivity of my sons and daughters, which YHUH has brought upon them.

15 For He has brought a nation upon them from far, a shameless nation and of a strange language, who neither reverenced the zachen nor pitied the child.

16 These have carried away the dear beloved children of the widow and left her that was alone desolate without daughters.

17 But how can I help you?

18 For He who brought these plagues upon you will deliver you from the hands of your enemies.

19 Go your derech, O my children, go your derech: for I am left desolate.

20 I have put off the clothing of shalom and put upon me the sackcloth of my tefillah: I will cry to YHUH in my yamim.

21 Be of tov cheer, O my children, cry to YHUH and He will deliver you from the power and hand of the enemies.

22 For my tikvah is in YHUH, that He will save you; and gilah is come to me from the Set-apart One because of the rachamim which shall soon come to you from YHUH our YAHUSHA.

23 For I sent you out with mourning and weeping: but Ahlohim will give you to me again with gilah and simcha le-olam-va-ed.

24 Like as now the neighbors of Tzion have seen your captivity: so shall they see shortly your YAHUSHA from our Ahlohim which shall come upon you with great tifereth and brightness of YHUH.

25 My children, suffer patiently the wrath that is come upon you from Ahlohim: for your enemy has persecuted you; but shortly you shall see his destruction and shall tread upon his neck.

26 My delicate ones have gone rough derachot and were taken away as a flock caught by the enemies.

27 Be of tov comfort, O my children and cry to Ahlohim: for you shall be remembered by Him who brought these things upon you.

28 For as it was your mind to go astray from Ahlohim: so, being returned, seek Him ten times more.

29 For He that has brought these plagues upon you shall bring you everlasting gilah with your YAHUSHA.

30 Take a tov lev, O Yahrushalayim: for He that gave you that name will comfort you.

31 Miserable are they who afflicted you and rejoiced at your fall.

32 Miserable are the cities which your children served: miserable is she that received your sons.

33 For as she rejoiced at your ruin and was glad at your fall: so shall she be grieved for her own desolation.

34 For I will take away the rejoicing of her great multitude and her pride shall be turned into mourning.

35 For fire shall come upon her from YHUH, long to endure; and she shall be inhabited by shedim for a great time.

36 O Yahrushalayim, look around you toward the east and behold the gilah that comes to you from Ahlohim.

37 Look, your sons come, whom you sent away, they come gathered together from the east to the west by the Word of the Kadosh One, rejoicing in the kavod of Ahlohim.

5 Put off, O Yahrushalayim, the garment of mourning and affliction and put on the tifereth of the esteem that comes from Ahlohim le-olam-va-ed.

2 Cast on you a double garment of the tzedakah which comes from Ahlohim; and set a keter on your head of the kavod of YHUH.

3 For Ahlohim will show your brightness to every country under the shamayim.

4 For your name shall be called of Ahlohim le-olam-va-ed. The shalom of tzedakah and the kavod of Ahlohim's avdoot.

5 Arise, O Yahrushalayim and stand on high and look about toward the east and behold your children gathered from the west to the east by the Word of The Set Apart One, rejoicing in the remembrance of Ahlohim.

6 For they departed from you on foot and were led away by their enemies: but Ahlohim brings them to you exalted with tifereth, as children of the Kingdom.

7 For Ahlohim has appointed that every high hill and banks of long continuance should be cast down and valleys filled up to make even the ground, that Yisrael may go safely in the tifereth of Ahlohim,

8 Moreover even the woods and every sweet-smelling eytz shall overshadow Yisrael by the mitzvah of Ahlohim.

9 For Ahlohim shall lead Yisrael with gilah in the Ohr of His tifereth with the rachamim and tzedakah that comes from Him.

6 A copy of a letter that Yirmeyahu sent to them who were about to be led captives into Bavel by the melech of Bavel, to certify them, as it was commanded to him by Ahlohim.

2 Because of the sins which you have committed before Ahlohim, you shall be led away captive into Bavel by Nevuchadnetsar melech of the Babylonians.

3 So when you come to Bavel, you shall remain there many years and for a long season, namely, seven generations: and after that I will bring you away in shalom from there.

4 Now shall you see in Bavel ahlohim of silver and of gold and of wood, borne upon shoulders, which cause the goyim to fear.

5 Beware therefore that you in no way be like the goyim, neither be you like them, when you see the multitude before them and behind them, worshipping them.

6 But rather say you in your levavot, O YHUH, we must give You avdoot.

7 For My Malach, YAHUSHA, is with you and I Myself am caring for your beings.

8 As for their tongue, it is polished by the workman and they themselves are gilded and laid over with silver; yet are they but false and cannot speak.

9 And taking gold, as it were for a virgin that loves to gilah, they make ketarim for the heads of their ahlohim.

10 Sometimes also their kohanim convey from their ahlohim gold and silver and bestow it upon themselves.

11 Yes, they will give of it to the common harlots and deck them as men with garments, being ahlohim of silver and ahlohim of gold and wood.

12 Yet these ahlohim cannot save themselves from rust and moth, though they be covered with purple raiment.

13 They wipe their faces because of the dust of the temple, when there is much upon them.

14 And it that cannot put to death one that offends it; it holds a scepter, as though it were a shophet of the country.

15 It has also in its right hand a dagger and an ax: but cannot deliver itself from war and thieves.

16 By which they are known not to be ahlohim: therefore fear them not.

17 For like a vessel that a man uses is worthless when it is broken, even so it is with their ahlohim: when they are set up in their temples, their eyes are full of dust through the feet of them that come in.

18 And as the doors are made secure on every side upon him that offends the melech, as being committed to suffer death: even so their kohanim make fast their temples with doors, with locks and bars, lest their ahlohim be spoiled by robbers.

19 They ohr candles for them, yes, more than for themselves and they cannot see even one.

20 They are as one of the beams of the temple, yet they say their levavot are gnawed upon by things creeping out of the earth; and when they eat them and their clothes, they feel it not.

21 Their faces are made black through the smoke that comes out of the temple.

22 Upon their bodies and heads sit bats, swallows and birds and the cats also.

23 By this you may know that they are not ahlohim: therefore fear them not.

24 Notwithstanding the gold that is about them to make them beautiful, except they wipe off the rust, they will not shine: for neither when they were melted did they feel it.

25 The things in which there is no breath are bought for a most high price.

26 They are borne upon shoulders, having no feet by which they declare to men that they are quite worthless.

27 They also that serve them are ashamed: for if they fall to the ground at any time, they cannot rise up again by themselves: neither, if one set them upright, can they move by themselves: neither, if they be bowed down, can they make themselves straight: but they set gifts before them as to dead men.

28 As for the things that are sacrificed to them, their kohanim sell and abuse; in like manner their wives lay up part of it in salt; but to the poor and impotent they give nothing of it.

29 Women in nidah and women in childbirth eat their sacrifices: by these things you may know that they are not ahlohim: fear them not.

30 For how can they be called ahlohim? Because women set meat before the ahlohim of silver, gold and wood?

31 And their kohanim sit in their temples, having their clothes rent and their heads and beards shaven and nothing upon their heads.

32 They roar and cry before their ahlohim, as men do at a pagan feast when one is dead.

33 The kohanim also take off their garments and clothe their wives and children.

34 Whether it be evil that one does to them, or tov, they are not able to reward that: they can neither set up a melech, nor put him down.

35 In like manner, they can neither give riches nor money: though a man make a vow to them and keep it not, they will not require it.

36 They can save no man from death, neither deliver the weak from the mighty.

37 They cannot restore a blind man to his sight, nor help any man in his distress.

38 They can show no rachamim to the widow, nor do tov to the orphan.

39 Their ahlohim of wood and which are overlaid with gold and silver, are like the stones that be carved out of the har: they that worship them shall be confounded.

40 How should a man then think and say that they are ahlohim, when even the Chaldeans themselves dishonor them?

41 Who if they shall see one dumb that cannot speak, they bring him and intreat Baal that he may speak, as though he were able to understand.

42 Yet they cannot understand this themselves and leave them: for they have no da’at.

43 The women also with cords about them, sitting in the derachot, burn bran for perfume: but if any of them, drawn by someone that passes by, lie with it, she reproaches her fellow that she was not thought as worthy as herself, nor her cord broken.

44 Whatever is done among them is false: how may it then be thought or said that they are ahlohim?

45 They are made by carpenters and goldsmiths: they can be nothing else than the workmen will have them to be.

46 And they themselves that made them can never continue long; how should then the things that are made by them be ahohim?

47 For they left lies and reproaches to them that come after.

48 For when there comes any war or plague upon them, their kohanim consult with themselves where they may be hidden with them.

49 How then cannot men perceive that they be not ahlohim, which can neither save themselves from war nor from plague?

50 For seeing they be but of wood and overlaid with silver and gold, it shall be known from now on that they are false:

51 And it shall manifestly appear to all goyim and melechim that they are not ahlohim, but the works of men's hands and that there is no work of Ahlohim in them.

52 Who then may not know that they are not ahlohim?

53 For neither can they set up a melech in the land, nor give rain to men.

54 Neither can they judge their own cause, nor redress a wrong, being unable: for they are as crows between the shamayim and earth.

55 So when fire falls upon the bayit of ahlohim of wood, or laid over with gold or silver, their kohanim will flee away and escape; but they themselves shall be burned asunder like beams.

56 Moreover they cannot withstand any melech or enemies: how can it then be thought or said that they are ahlohim?

57 Neither are those ahlohim of wood and laid over with silver or gold able to escape either from thieves or robbers.

58 Whose gold and silver and garments with which they are clothed, those that are strong take it and go away with it: neither are they able to help themselves.

59 Therefore it is better to be a melech who shows his power, or else a profitable vessel in a bayit, which the owner shall have use of, than such false ahlohim; or to be a door in a bayit, to keep such things in it, than such false ahlohim. Or, a pillar of wood in a palace, than such false ahlohim.

60 For shemesh, yarayach and cochavim, being bright and sent to do their offices are obedient.

61 In like manner the lightning when it breaks forth is easy to be seen; and after the same manner the wind blows in every country.

62 And when Ahlohim commands the clouds to go over the whole olam, they do as they are told.

63 And the fire sent from above to consume hills and woods does as it is commanded: but these are not like them, neither in show nor power.

64 So it is neither to be supposed nor said that they are ahlohim, seeing, they are able neither to judge causes nor to do tov to men.

65 Knowing therefore that they are not ahlohim, fear them not,

66 For they can neither curse nor bless melechim:

67 Neither can they show signs in the shamayim among the goyim, nor shine as the shemesh, nor reflect ohr as the yarayach.

68 The beasts are better than they are: for they can get under a cover and help themselves.

69 It is then by no means manifest to us that they are ahlohim: therefore fear them not.

70 For as a scarecrow in a garden of cucumbers keeps nothing: so are their ahlohim of wood laid over with silver and gold.

71 And likewise their ahlohim of wood, laid over with silver and gold, are like a white thorn in an orchard, that every bird sits upon; as also to a dead gooff that is cast into the dark.

72 And you shall know them to be not ahlohim by the bright purple that rots upon them and they themselves afterward shall be eaten and shall be a reproach in the country.

73 Better therefore is the tzadik who has no idols: for he shall be from reproach. X
